The gravy will thicken as it sits. 1 Pull off small pieces of the breakfast sausage with your fingers and add them to a large skillet in a single layer. Cook the flour for 2 minutes, then slowly add milk and stir constantly as you pour it in to avoid clumps. Add the liquid to the cooked sausage, 1/2 cup at a time, and stir until thickened.
